Anselm also used his time to make sure that he had more of his famous liquor distilled. He made decent money offloading his rough spirit to the people of the village and beyond. Selling mead was acceptable and he openly brewed his beer that was consumed almost in its entirety by the inhabitants of the Abbey and the Castle, but the hard stuff was his venture on the side. He dreamed of one day having a place of his own where he could carry out his experiments and live a life of debauchery – it was still some way off.
He had also discovered various narcotics over his lifetime of mixing potions, grinding leaves, using the essence of things to concoct a cure for anything and at times nothing. One plant he had discovered with a smile on his face was perfect for burning and inhaling its smoke – giving the user a feeling of contentment and peace, even eliciting at times laughter not just in the eyes but out loud. He enjoyed this diversion though it did hinder his work somewhat!
His life was perfect except for just one thing, a lack of female company and sexual satisfaction. He knew that his desires were dark and powerful but unlike his weak minded colleagues he did not think that it was the work of the devil and that he was destined for the eternal fires of hell. It didn’t make sense, this talk of the afterlife, he mused. What if I died as a baby? Would I be resurrected as a baby in Heaven? That wouldn’t be much fun. Or what if I died when very aged and unable to remember things or even eat without assistance. Being resurrected in that state also would not be fun. And, what if I lead a good life up unto a certain age but only because I have not had the opportunity to indulge in illicit or carnal pleasures? How can it be fair to disregard all of the good and condemn a man for his transgressions – transgressions that were ‘only human’?
So, did resurrection involve no recollection of your current self, but a freeing of an essence, a spirit that would live ephemerally alongside other entities or energies? Again, that didn’t appeal to Anselm and for the life of him he couldn’t resolve his issue with the afterlife. This was a demanding God, Anselm thought, one that must be revered, worshipped and lauded often – a needy God was not particularly appealing or attractive to Anselm and he realised that the devil was little better. No, these were creations of man he reasoned, and he need not live his life by their rules.
To be continued.
