When the royal party arrived a week later the weather had lifted, if only slightly, enough for the carriages and attendant armed riders to be able to traverse the last steep two miles of ascent to this fort and monastery in the Umbrian mountains, its remote location and the gloom of the overcast sky giving it a menacing and forbidding ambience. The five carriages were accompanied by fifty horsemen, all armed to the teeth and no doubt veterans of the recent border wars.
The royal party, along with representatives of the Spanish church, were here to discuss religious and military issues surrounding the recent skirmishes in an attempt to broker a peace with Rome. The Pope had threatened to crush all opposition the following Spring and to establish military bases to ensure Spanish cooperation and obedience to established church dogma, the talk of Cathars, Gnostics and untold heresies had filled the continent with a fear and a loathing of these untruths and the propaganda machine of the church had stirred up public opinion such that there would be slaughter, carnage if a settlement was not reached.
Prince Jose de Santa Maria Pinochet was a wily warrior and general, commanding huge respect from his men. He had outlived many of his contemporaries and at sixty three was seen as the last of a dying breed of soldier who would always lead from the front. He was accompanied by his prospective bride, the virginal Anna Maria Sanchez. Anna Maria was eighteen and had lived her life up to now in a convent with no congress either physical or otherwise with men. The marriage had been arranged to bring together the Prince’s dynasty in Northern Spain with Anna’s father’s realm in the South. That joining of forces was what the Pope feared – a united Spain would present a threat to the Holy Roman Empire should the heretical views being espoused across its dusty shores take root. The Pope knew that he would have to deal with the pesky Knights Templar at some time too and soon – they were connected in all of this he was sure, and why had they been moving much of their wealth to the South of France and into Spain? He would have to have a word with Louis about it.
But for now see what the conference brings. The Pope had instructed his delegates to play hardball at first in an effort to ring some concessions, and to drive up the tax levies that came to him in the form of alms, and then to be more amenable to compromise further down the line. Better to go in hard and back up a little he surmised.
To be continued.
