I used to love the work of Woody Allen, his scripts were always funny and often quite sexy. The likes of Manhattan, Hannah and her Sisters and Annie Hall all felt real, fresh and often touched something deep inside. Underneath the superficial gloss of witty one liners there was a deep understanding of the human condition. But when was the last time that the American Director made a good film? I remember having high expectations of Vicky, Christina, Barcelona not least because I had read that it featured a lesbian sex scene between Scarlett Johannsen and Penelope Cruz but I have to say that even those two couldn’t put any heat in the moment on screen the way it was filmed.
And yet the stars flock to work with the septuagenarian. I just don’t get it. His work these days seems rather self-indulgent and lacks any real insight. The scripts are hardly chuckle full anymore and actually could do with a lot more polish before they reach production. Just seems such a shame really.
Anyway, Woody’s latest work is ‘To Rome with Love’ and once again the director has assembled a stellar cast including Ms Cruz once again. Did you know she actually won an Oscar for Vicky, Christina? Unbelievable as far as I am concerned as I personally do not think she can act her way out of the proverbial paper bag but then beauty can get you a long way in life. All that needs to be said about the new film is that the critics are panning it.
